When Fabric Goes Beyond the Ordinary

Scabal continued that approach by introducing gold into its fabrics, bringing another precious material into the world of fine tailoring.

Scabal was established in Brussels in 1938, but an important part of its fabric story takes place in Huddersfield, England, a region with a long history of producing exceptional cloth.

Scabal acquired its Huddersfield mill in 1973. Since then, it has continued investing in the mill while combining traditional textile craftsmanship with modern fabric development. Today, the majority of Scabal fabrics are made at its own Yorkshire mill. 

That combination gives Scabal an interesting identity. Belgian roots meet generations of English weaving expertise, creating cloth designed for some of the highest levels of tailoring.

When finer fibers change the experience

With luxury suit fabric, numbers only tell part of the story.

The fineness and quality of wool can influence how a cloth feels, drapes, and performs once it becomes a finished garment. 

Scabal has spent decades developing increasingly fine wool fabrics. In 1990, its Huddersfield mill produced Golden Carat from 16.25 micron wool, followed in later years by Super 180's and Super 200's cloths. 

But the real question for the person wearing the suit is much simpler:

How does it feel?

Exceptional cloth can have an unmistakable softness while still creating the elegant drape and refined appearance you want from fine tailoring. That difference becomes much easier to understand once the fabric is in your hands and, eventually, on your shoulders.

Then Scabal took fabric even further

Scabal's story is not only about making wool finer. It is also about asking what else fabric can become.

Around the turn of the century, Scabal became the first company to incorporate precious materials directly into its fabrics.

Its Diamond Chip collection was followed by fabrics featuring gold, lapis lazuli, and platinum. 

The point is not that every custom suit needs precious materials woven into it.

Far from it.

What makes this interesting is what it says about the company behind the cloth. Scabal has been willing to experiment with materials and textile technology while continuing to rely on traditional weaving expertise.

That combination of craftsmanship and innovation is part of what makes Scabal fabric so distinctive.

The summit collection

If you want to understand how far Scabal has taken fine wool, look at Summit.

Scabal searched for exceptionally fine Australian wool to create this collection. The fibers are in the lower 12 micron range, and the cloth is kept as pure wool rather than being blended with other luxury fibers. 

The result is remarkably soft, with a feel Scabal describes as rivaling cashmere, while still offering the strength and drape required for fine tailoring. 

This is where technical specifications become something you can actually experience.

You can read about microns and wool quality all day, but when you put a fabric at this level in your hands, the numbers begin to make sense.

And there is vicuña

For most people, fine Merino wool already represents luxury.

Vicuña takes the conversation somewhere else entirely.

Native to the Andes, the vicuña produces an extraordinarily fine fleece that was highly valued by the Incas. Its fibers can measure roughly 6 to 12 microns and are even finer than cashmere. The material is exceptionally rare, delicate, and difficult to work with. 

Scabal says only one in every 100 available fibers can be combed in the special way required before weaving.

In 2008, the company introduced what it describes as the world's first 100 percent worsted spun vicuña suiting cloth. 

This is not everyday suit fabric.

And that is exactly what makes it fascinating.

It represents what happens when a fabric house keeps pursuing materials and techniques far beyond what most people will ever encounter.

What does this mean for your custom suit?

The rarest or most expensive fabric is not automatically the right fabric for every man.
